The Duomo rooftop in winter

Winter is when the roof of Milan Cathedral is quietest, the sunsets come before closing time and, on a sharp clear day, the Alps line up behind the spires.

The terraces stay open all winter, on the same 9 am to 7 pm hours as in summer. What changes is everything around them: the sun sets before 5 pm in December, the marble can be wet or icy, and the Po valley flips between grey fog and air so clear you can see the mountains.

Here is what to plan for between November 2026 and March 2027, based on the official rules and the dates published so far.

The quick answer

The Duomo terraces open from 9 am to 7 pm through the winter, last entry around 6.10 pm. The sun sets around 4.40 pm in December, so a 3.30 pm slot puts you on the roof for sunset. The Fabbrica can suspend terrace visits in bad weather; official tickets are refunded only if the site closes completely. Christmas 2026 visiting hours had not been published at the end of October.

Is the Duomo rooftop open in winter?

Yes. The terraces keep the 9 am to 7 pm hours all year, with the last entry around 6.10 pm. Only the daylight shrinks.

There is no separate winter timetable on the official access page: the cathedral and the terraces run 9 am to 7 pm. The ticket offices close 70 minutes before closing time, so buy online if you want a late slot.

The clocks went back on 25 October 2026 and go forward again on 28 March 2027. Between those dates the roof stays open for about two hours after sunset in midwinter. After dark the view is the city lights, not the mountains. For the Alps you need daylight.

Does the Duomo rooftop close in rain, snow or ice?

It can. The access rules let the Fabbrica suspend terrace visits in heavy bad weather or adverse conditions, for safety. Light rain alone does not usually stop them.

Article 1.6 of the official access rules says that in case of strong bad weather or any adverse conditions, the Veneranda Fabbrica may suspend activities on the terraces at its sole discretion. There is no fixed threshold in the rules. Ice on the stairs, snow or a storm is the realistic trigger; drizzle is not. A guest on the 1-hour rooftop tour remembers a wet day: "It was pouring rain on the day we visited so we walked gingerly along the marble rooftop and staircases [...] The views were still magnificent although not as far ranging as they would have been on a clear day".

Money is where it gets awkward. The official sales conditions refund tickets only if the site closes completely for organisational reasons or bad weather, minus the presale fee. Otherwise you can only change the date, up to one working day before. Every tour on this site cancels for a full refund up to 24 hours before, which makes a tour the more flexible booking in a doubtful week.

When can you see the Alps from the Duomo?

On clear days, most often in late autumn and winter after rain or wind has cleared the air. On foggy or hazy days you will not see them at all.

The Fabbrica's own terraces page promises that on clear days you can see the mountains that surround the Po valley. In summer heat haze usually hides them. Cold, dry days after a front has passed are the ones to wait for, and they come mostly between November and March. Guests who got lucky say so: one on the Duomo, rooftop and gelato walk saw "Milan and the distant mountains (Alps and Apennines) from the top of the Duomo".

Look north from the central terrace, the highest point visitors reach at 45 metres. If you have a flexible day in Milan, keep the roof for the clearest morning in the forecast and do the Last Supper or the museums on the grey one.

What are the Duomo's Christmas and New Year hours for 2026?

Not published yet. At the end of October 2026 the Fabbrica had not released visiting hours for Christmas; plan around the services and check the official site in December.

Christmas is a working time for a cathedral. In 2025 the official Christmas service page listed masses on 24 December from 7 am, a 5.30 pm chapter Eucharist and a 10.30 pm vigil with the Archbishop, and on 25 December masses from 7 am to 5.30 pm with the Archbishop's Pontifical Mass at 11 am. Expect tourist visits to the cathedral to give way to worship on those days, and check the terraces separately.

If your trip combines the Duomo with Leonardo, note that the Last Supper museum is closed on 25 December and 1 January, and every Monday. Our post on Last Supper tickets for 2027 covers when those dates go on sale.

What should you wear on the Duomo rooftop in winter?

Warm layers, gloves and flat shoes with grip. Take your hat off inside the cathedral, and leave the big backpack at the hotel.

The roof is exposed and the marble is cold underfoot. The access rules require comfortable shoes on the terraces and advise against heels and leather soles; after rain the steps are slippery, so rubber soles matter more in winter than in July.

Inside the cathedral the dress code still applies, with one winter catch: no hats. Shoulders and knees should be covered, which a coat solves. Suitcases, large bags and glass are not allowed, and there are no toilets on the terraces or in the cathedral; the Duomo Museum has them. The full list is in our dress code and security guide.

Is a guided rooftop tour worth it in winter?

If your dates are uncertain, yes: free cancellation up to 24 hours before beats an official ticket you can only move. The view is the same either way.

A guide adds roughly $20 to $30 over the official ticket for the same visit: the Duomo Pass Lift costs EUR 26 on the official price list, and the guided Duomo and rooftop tour starts at $56. In winter you also buy flexibility. One guest liked that their group was "Starting at the rooftop to escape any expected rain".

Pick an early afternoon departure in December and January if you want light for photos, or a morning one if the forecast promises a clear start. Our guided tour guide does the full maths.
