Booking choice: The Duomo and rooftop guided tour, from $56 per person. Check dates Tour details
Most visitors only check one number, the closing time, and then turn up at 6.30 pm to find the gates shut. On the Duomo terraces the time that matters is the last entry, and the ticket offices close even earlier.
This post sets out the 2026 hours as the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo publishes them, the late openings that ran from Easter to mid September, and how sunset fits into the day in each season.
The quick answer
The terraces open from 9 am to 7 pm, and the last entry is around 6.10 pm. Ticket offices close 70 minutes before closing time. In 2026 the terraces stayed open to 8 pm on Easter weekend, the late April and early May holidays, 30 May to 2 June, and every Friday to Sunday from 5 June to 13 September. Booked tickets are timed: your slot is when you start the climb, with 30 minutes of tolerance either side.
What are the Duomo terrace opening hours in 2026?
Every day from 9 am to 7 pm, with the last entry around 6.10 pm. The cathedral keeps the same visiting hours.
The Veneranda Fabbrica gives the cathedral's visiting hours as 9 am to 7 pm with the last access at 6.10 pm on its access update page, and the terraces run on the same day. Worshippers can enter earlier, from 7 am, through the side doors; that is for prayer, not sightseeing.
The ticket offices are the trap. The official sales conditions say they close 70 minutes before the complex closes, so on a normal day you cannot buy a ticket at the desk after about 5.50 pm. Book online and the problem goes away. The Duomo Museum, included in the Duomo Pass and Combo tickets, is closed on Wednesdays.
| What | Hours | Last entry or sale |
|---|---|---|
| Terraces (lift or stairs) | 9 am to 7 pm | About 6.10 pm |
| Cathedral, for visitors | 9 am to 7 pm | 6.10 pm |
| Cathedral, for prayer | From 7 am, side doors | n/a |
| Ticket offices | Open from 9 am | 70 minutes before closing (about 5.50 pm) |
| Duomo Museum | Closed on Wednesdays | Check the official site |
Which days did the terraces stay open until 8 pm in 2026?
Easter (3 to 6 April), 25 and 26 April, 1 to 3 May, 30 May to 2 June, and Friday to Sunday from 5 June to 13 September.
The official special openings page for spring and summer 2026 lists the dates. On those days the terraces closed at 8 pm, the last ticket was sold at 6.50 pm and the last admission was at 7 pm. From 11 June the Fabbrica also ran Thursday evening openings with live music.
The extra hour is the one that counts. In June the sun sets after 9 pm, so even an 8 pm closing does not get you a sunset on the roof, but it does give you the long, low light on the marble once the midday heat is gone.
| 2026 dates | Closing | Last ticket | Last admission |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 to 6 April (Easter) | 8 pm | 6.50 pm | 7 pm |
| 25 and 26 April | 8 pm | 6.50 pm | 7 pm |
| 1 to 3 May | 8 pm | 6.50 pm | 7 pm |
| 30 May to 2 June | 8 pm | 6.50 pm | 7 pm |
| Fridays to Sundays, 5 June to 13 September | 8 pm | 6.50 pm | 7 pm |
| All other days | 7 pm | About 5.50 pm at the desk | About 6.10 pm |
What does the time on a Duomo rooftop ticket mean?
On the Duomo Pass, the Combo and the Duomo and terraces tickets, it is the time you start the climb to the roof, with 30 minutes of tolerance before or after.
The official sales conditions are precise about this. On the Culture Pass and the cathedral tickets the slot is your cathedral entry instead. Arrive more than 30 minutes late and staff can refuse you. Leave time for the security check on top: bags are opened and everyone walks through a metal detector, tour groups included.
Combined tickets are valid on the chosen date and the following day, with one entry per site. That helps if the weather turns: do the cathedral today, the roof tomorrow. Official tickets are not refundable, but you can change the date up to one working day before, within three months of purchase. Prices and what each pass covers are in our ticket price guide.

The guided cathedral visit and the lift to the terraces on one timed ticket. On weekends the rooftop part can run later in the day.
Explore the Duomo and rooftop guided tour Tour detailsCan you watch the sunset from the Duomo rooftop?
From about late October to February, yes: the sun sets between about 4.40 pm and 6 pm, well before the last entry. In summer it sets after the terraces close.
This is the simplest way to plan a sunset visit. Compare the sunset time with the 6.10 pm last entry. The times below are calculated for central Milan and rounded; timeanddate.com has the daily table.
From late October, once the clocks go back, the sun drops behind the city around 5 pm and the roof is still open. Book a slot about an hour before sunset so you have time to climb and find a place on the central terrace, 45 metres up. In summer the light turns gold in the last hour, and guests on the Duomo and rooftop tour pass on a tip from their guide: one wrote that "the Duomo looks pink around 830pm due to the sun's reflection". That is a view from the piazza, after the gates have shut.
| Date | Sunset in Milan (approx.) | Sunset on the roof? |
|---|---|---|
| 5 April 2026 | 7.54 pm | Only just, on the Easter late opening |
| 21 June 2026 | 9.15 pm | No, the terraces close first |
| 13 September 2026 | 7.40 pm | Yes, on a late-opening day (open to 8 pm) |
| 15 October 2026 | 6.39 pm | Tight: enter by 6.10 pm |
| 1 November 2026 | 5.12 pm | Yes |
| 21 December 2026 | 4.42 pm | Yes |
| 28 February 2027 | 6.07 pm | Yes, with an early slot |

What happens to the hours after summer 2026?
The terraces are back on 9 am to 7 pm. The Fabbrica had not published any 2027 late openings or Christmas 2026 visiting hours at the end of October 2026.
The 2026 extensions were tied to holidays and the summer season, and the official page covers only those dates. Easter 2027 falls on 28 March, the same day the clocks go forward, so that is the first long weekend to watch on the official Duomo site. We will update this post when a 2027 calendar appears.
Two things can shorten any day. Services and celebrations in the cathedral change visiting times, and the access rules allow the Fabbrica to suspend terrace visits in bad weather. Winter visits, holiday hours and weather closures have their own post: the Duomo rooftop in winter 2026-27.
Which tour times fit the terrace hours best?
Morning tours beat the queues; late afternoon tours give the best light. The guided options start from 8.45 am on weekdays.
The small-group Duomo, rooftop and gelato walk starts at 8.45 am Monday to Saturday and 10.30 am on Sundays, so you are on the roof soon after it opens. The 1-hour rooftop tour is the short option if you only want the terraces with a guide: the lift to the first level, then about 75 steps to the top.
If you go on your own, take the first slot of the day or the last two hours. Midday in July is the worst choice: the white marble throws the heat back at you and there is no shade. More on timing in the best time to visit the rooftop.
