The best time to visit the Duomo rooftop is the first slot of the day, around 9 am, on a weekday. The second-best is the last hour before closing, and from mid-October to March that hour can include sunset.
Hours below are the Veneranda Fabbrica's current visiting times and its 2026 special openings. Sunset times are for central Milan.
The quick answer
Go at 9 am on a weekday for the thinnest crowds and cool marble. For sunset, go between mid-October and March, when the sun sets before the 7 pm closing. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons; summer middays are hot on white stone. The Alps show best on clear, cold days after wind or rain. Bad weather can close the terraces at short notice.

What is the best time of day to visit the Duomo rooftop?
The 9 am opening slot. Lines are shortest, the marble is still cool and the light is soft. Late afternoon is second best.
Crowds build from about 10.30 am, when the tour groups arrive, and stay heavy through early afternoon. The middle of the day is also when the roof is hottest: the white Candoglia marble throws the sun back at you, and there is almost no shade on the central terrace.
The last hour, between about 5 pm and the 6.10 pm last entry, is calmer again, with warmer light on the spires. The facade faces west, so the evening sun lights the front spires and goes down beyond the facade end of the central terrace.

Can you watch the sunset from the Duomo rooftop?
Yes, from about mid-October to the end of March, when the sun sets before the 7 pm closing. From April to September it sets after the terraces close.
Normal hours are 9 am to 7 pm with last entry at 6.10 pm. Compare that with sunset in Milan on the 15th of each month:
| Month | Sunset (about) | Sunset on the roof? |
|---|---|---|
| January | 5.05 pm | Yes |
| February | 5.50 pm | Yes |
| March | 6.30 pm | Yes, until the clocks change in late March |
| April to August | 8 to 9.10 pm | No, even on late-opening evenings |
| September | 7.35 pm | No |
| October | 6.40 pm | From mid-month, just; after the clocks change, easily |
| November | 4.55 pm | Yes |
| December | 4.40 pm | Yes |
Book a slot about an hour before sunset and allow 15 minutes for security. Winter sunsets are cold and the marble is hard to sit on, but the city lights come on below you. The late-opening evenings of 2026 closed at 8 pm, still well before a summer sunset. The winter 2026-27 post has what to expect up there from November.

Daily from 9 am to 7 pm, last entry 6.10 pm. On spring holidays and summer weekends in 2026 the terraces stayed open to 8 pm.
The 2026 special openings kept the terraces open until 8 pm (last ticket 6.50 pm, last admission 7 pm) on these dates:
- Easter, 3 to 6 April
- 25 and 26 April
- 1 to 3 May
- 30 May to 2 June
- Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 5 June to 13 September
From 11 June, Thursday evenings added openings with live music. Ticket offices close 70 minutes before the complex, so buy online for late slots. The year's hours and any changes are kept up to date in the 2026 hours post.

What is the best season to visit the Duomo rooftop?
April, May, late September and October: mild, mostly dry and less crowded than summer. Winter is quiet and clear, summer is hot.
- Spring (April to June): comfortable, but Easter, 25 April, 1 May and 2 June are Italian holidays and the roof fills up.
- Summer (July and August): hot and bright on white marble, and busy with groups. Go at 9 am, wear a hat and carry water, which is the only drink allowed.
- Autumn (September to November): fewer people from October, sunsets come back within opening hours, and November rain can close the roof.
- Winter (December to February): the quietest weeks outside Christmas, the clearest air and the best chance of Alps on the horizon. Cold wind on the central terrace.
Fashion and design weeks fill Milan's hotels more than the roof, but the city is busier all round in those weeks.

A small-group morning at 8.45 am: the Duomo, the roof by lift, then a walk to Sforza Castle and gelato.

On clear, cold days, most often from October to March and after rain or a north wind has cleared the haze. The Monte Rosa massif rises to the north-west.
The Fabbrica's terraces page promises the mountains around the Po plain on clear days, and that is the honest phrase: they are not there on most summer days, when humidity and haze hide them. The best days come after the foehn, the dry wind that blows down from the Alps in winter, or after a cold front. Look north-west for the snowy Monte Rosa group, north for the peaks above the lakes.
Morning is better than afternoon for the view, because haze builds through the day. Check a webcam or simply look north from your hotel window before you go.

Do the Duomo terraces close for bad weather?
Yes. The Fabbrica can suspend terrace visits for heavy rain, storms, strong wind, snow or ice, often at short notice.
The access rules (article 1.6) let the Fabbrica stop terrace visits whenever the weather makes them unsafe. If the whole site closes, official tickets are refunded minus the presale fee; otherwise official tickets can only be moved to another date, up to one working day before.
Tours handle this more gently: every one on this site cancels for a full refund up to 24 hours before, which is useful when you are watching a forecast. Summer thunderstorms in Milan tend to come in the late afternoon, so a morning slot is also the safer one in July and August.

Go at 9 am on a weekday, avoid Italian public holidays, and stay off the roof between 10.30 am and 2 pm in summer.
The crowd follows the tour groups. One Veditalia guest on the rooftop tour wrote that the guide made sure the group "got to see everything in spite of the crowds that day", and called the crowds the only downside. Tuesday to Thursday are the easiest days; Saturday afternoons and holiday weekends are the hardest.
A guide doesn't make the roof emptier, but a 9 am tour does both jobs. The small-group gelato walk starts at 8.45 am from Monday to Saturday, among the earliest departures in Milan.

Which day of the week is best for the Duomo rooftop?
A weekday, Tuesday to Thursday. Wednesday is fine for the roof, but the Duomo Museum is closed that day.
- Monday: the roof is open, the Last Supper is not. Good for a Duomo-only day.
- Wednesday: the museum is closed, so the Duomo Pass loses part of its value; the cathedral alone costs €8.
- Saturday: the busiest day on the roof.
- Sunday: services can limit visits inside the cathedral, and the combo tour splits its weekend visits in two. The museum is free on the last Sunday of the month.
On weekends the Duomo and rooftop tour visits the cathedral first and the roof later in the day, with free time between. On weekdays it runs straight through. Pairing the roof with the Last Supper? Read Duomo and Last Supper.
A weekday morning with a guide: the cathedral, then straight up to the roof by lift, from $56.
