The Duomo dress code is short: inside the cathedral, no sleeveless or low-cut tops, no shorts, no miniskirts and no hats. Tour operators sum it up as shoulders and knees covered, for men and women. On the roof the rule that matters is shoes.
Everything below comes from the Veneranda Fabbrica's behaviour and access rules (July 2025 edition), quoted by article, plus what the tour operators tell their guests.
The quick answer
Cover shoulders and knees and take off your hat inside the cathedral; a scarf or light shirt in your bag solves it. Wear flat shoes with grip for the roof: no heels, no metal soles. Leave suitcases, big backpacks, glass, knives, selfie sticks and drones behind. Everyone goes through a metal detector and a bag check. Under-12s must be with an adult on the terraces.

What is the dress code for the Milan Duomo?
Inside the cathedral: no sleeveless or low-cut tops, no shorts, no miniskirts, no hats. In practice, shoulders and knees covered for everyone.
Article 2.1 of the Fabbrica's rules asks every visitor to be dressed decorously and lists what is not allowed inside the cathedral: sleeveless or low-cut clothing, shorts, miniskirts and hats. The tour operators translate it the same way. Veditalia: "Knees and shoulders MUST be covered for both men and women." Wanderinitaly adds off-the-shoulder tops to the list.
The check happens at the door, by staff, and they do send people away. A light scarf or a shirt over a vest solves it in seconds. Holders of the official Fast-Track Pass get a kimono-cape at the terrace gate for exactly this reason. Men in shorts have no easy fix, so wear long trousers or a skirt below the knee on a cathedral day.
Dressed for it? A guide inside the cathedral, then the lift to the roof, from $56.

The cathedral rules are written for the inside. On the roof the official requirement is comfortable shoes, but dress for the cathedral if your ticket includes it.
The Fabbrica's wording splits the two: decorous dress for the whole complex, the specific list for the cathedral, and comfortable shoes for the terraces. Operators recommend a sun hat on the roof on hot days, which tells you hats are fine up there.
Most visits combine the two. The Duomo Pass, the Combo and every guided tour that includes the cathedral take you inside at some point, so dress for the stricter rule all day and keep the hat in your bag. Tina P., after the Wanderinitaly terrace tour: "Make sure you have clothes that cover your knees and shoulders to enter the basilica."

What shoes should you wear on the Duomo roof?
Flat, closed shoes with rubber soles. The roof is sloping, polished marble, and the stairs are narrow spirals.
The rules (article 2.7) ban shoes with metal soles or anything that could damage the floor, and advise against heels and any footwear you can't walk steadily in, because some passages are very narrow and steep. Veditalia and Wanderinitaly both ask for comfortable shoes, "preferably with a rubber sole".
Sandals aren't banned, but the gelato tour warns that flip-flops may not be allowed inside the church, and nobody enjoys 250 marble steps in them. On wet days the marble gets slippery. Trainers are the right answer in every season.

What items are not allowed in the Duomo?
Weapons and knives, glass and ceramics, helmets, drones, selfie sticks, large bags and suitcases, animals except guide dogs, and food or drink other than water.
Article 2.6 of the rules is long. The items visitors most often bring by mistake:
| Item | Allowed? | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Small backpack or handbag | Yes | Opened at security |
| Suitcase, bulky backpack | No | Leave it at a luggage store |
| Water | Yes | The only drink allowed, with medicines |
| Food, other drinks | No | No eating anywhere in the complex |
| Glass or ceramic items | No | Includes glass bottles and mugs |
| Knives, large scissors | No | Nail files and small scissors are fine |
| Selfie stick | No | Extendable photo sticks are listed |
| Helmets | No | Not even carried in the hand |
| Drones | No | Nor their controllers |
| Pets | No | Guide dogs excepted |
| Bikes, scooters | No | Including electric ones |
Flowers, balloons, laser pointers, musical instruments and banners are on the list too. Lighters, deodorants and perfume up to 100 ml are allowed.

Everyone goes through it: a metal detector and an open-bag check at the entrance, then a ticket scan. Pre-booked tickets and tours don't skip it.
The checks are ordered by the public security authorities, says article 2.2, and run by staff at every entrance. Expect to open your bag, empty your pockets into a tray and walk through a gate. The line moves steadily, but in summer late mornings it can take 20 minutes or more.
No tour skips it. A skip-the-line ticket skips the ticket office; the official seasonal Fast-Track Pass adds a reserved security lane, but the check is the same. Arrive 15 minutes before your slot, with your bag already light. More on what a tour really skips in Is a guided tour worth it?.
Skip the ticket office, with a guide who knows the entrances: the Duomo and rooftop tour, from $56.

Not at the Duomo itself. Use a luggage storage shop or locker near the square, booked through an app, for a few euros a day.
Large bags and suitcases are not allowed in and the cathedral has no cloakroom. Several app-based services such as Radical Storage use shops and hotels within a few minutes' walk of the square, from roughly €5 per bag per day. Book ahead in summer. Milano Centrale station also has a staffed left-luggage office if you are arriving by train.
Tour operators say the same: City Wonders reminds guests that storage is not part of its tour and to arrange it before starting. The Last Supper has lockers for up to 60 minutes, for small bags only.

What are the rules for children on the Duomo terraces?
Under-12s must be with an adult aged 18 or over, prams must be folded, and under-6s go free. There are no toilets on the roof.
Article 2.7 bars children under 12 from the terraces unless an adult is with them, and prams and pushchairs unless folded and unused. Under-6s still need a free ticket for the timed slot. Toilets are not available on the terraces, in the cathedral or at the central ticket office (article 2.10). Use the Duomo Museum's, or the paid toilets outside, where the accessible one is free and can be used by families with children under 6.
Children usually love it. A family of five on the Wanderinitaly terrace tour, with kids aged 9 to 13: "everyone loved it. Lots of photo opportunities but also lots of just chill out opportunities." The spiral stairs are the part to plan for with toddlers. The lift or stairs guide covers the climb.

Can you take photos, and what else is not allowed?
Personal photos and videos are fine everywhere. Professional shoots, eating, sunbathing on the terraces and leaning over the parapets are not.
The rules (article 2.7) ban commercial photography without a permit and any recording that isn't for personal use. Phones and ordinary cameras are fine on the roof and inside the cathedral; flash photography is best avoided inside. Wedding dresses and costumes are banned unless you are part of a ceremony in the cathedral.
Also out: smoking, phone calls and loud voices, sunbathing on the terraces or the cathedral steps, climbing on the architecture and leaning over the balustrades. Inside, phones go on silent: the cathedral is a working church with daily services. The roof is where you can relax a little, sit on the warm marble and take your time.
Ready for the roof? The cathedral with a guide, then the terraces by lift: 2.5 hours from $56.
