Veditalia · Piazza del Duomo

The Duomo and its roof, guided

A Veditalia guide walks you through Milan Cathedral, then takes you up by lift to the marble terraces among the spires. Pick it for the stories: the statues, windows and gargoyles make far more sense when someone points them out.

Duomo & Rooftop Super Saver Guided Tour

About this experience

Veditalia is a Milan tour company and this is its best-seller, with more than 2,000 reviews. You meet under the arches at Piazza del Duomo 4, next to 12 OZ Coffee Joint, and start outside with the facade, its statues and the gargoyles. Then you walk past the ticket queue into the cathedral. Inside, the guide covers the stained glass, the side altars and the oddities most people walk past: the flayed St Bartholomew carved by Marco d'Agrate in 1562, holding his own skin, and the brass meridian line set into the floor near the entrance in 1786.

After the interior you head to the lift. It stops at the first level, about 31 metres up, and Veditalia counts about 75 steps from there to the central terrace at 45 metres, right over the nave. Everyone walks down: the official terrace rules make the descent stairs-only. Read the weekend small print before you book. On Saturdays and Sundays the inside part and the rooftop are split, with free time in between, so the visit stretches across the day.

Is the guide worth it? The official Combo Lift ticket covers the same cathedral and terraces, plus the Duomo Museum, for €26 (about $30) on the Veneranda Fabbrica's price list. You pay roughly $26 more for the guide, the booked slot and the headset. For a first visit that's fair money. If the view is all you want, buy the official ticket and go at 9 am. And neither option skips security: "skip the line" means the ticket queue only.

What guests say

★★★★★

Our tour guide was great! We learned lots of neat historical facts about the Duomo from the layout of the stained glass windows, unique statues and parts of the Duomo, and took lots of stunning photos both inside and out. I’m glad we had the lift pass for the rooftop as well.

Giulia was very knowledgeable and shared many interesting details about the Duomo and its rooftop that you may not come across on your own.

★★★★★

We were able to take the elevator up half way but getting to the rooftop involved taking steps to reach the top level. [...] It was a very windy day so the headsets provided helped greatly.

Tiffany R. · Apr 2026
★★★★★

It was well organized and started on time. Very knowledgeable and approachable guide, who managed to keep the group engaged, including the kids.

Tips before you book

  • Book a weekday if you want it all in one go. On weekends the rooftop runs later, with a break in between.
  • Check the meeting point on the map before you set off: a guest's phone sent them to an old 12 OZ Coffee Joint that has closed. If you can't see the Duomo, you're in the wrong place.
  • Wear rubber soles. The roof is marble, sloped in places and slippery after rain.
  • Carry a scarf for your shoulders. Hats come off inside the cathedral.
  • Leave big bags at the hotel: large bags, glass and suitcases are turned away at security.
