Duomo, roof and gelato

A licensed local guide meets a group of 15 at most in the Galleria at 8.45 am, takes you into the Duomo and up to its terraces by lift, then walks you to Sforza Castle with a gelato stop. Book it if you want the roof plus a first look at central Milan in a single morning.

Duomo, Rooftop, Sforza Castle & Gelato

About this experience

You meet in front of the Louis Vuitton store inside the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. The guide wears a badge with their name, which you receive a couple of days before. Starting at 8.45 am (10.30 on Sundays) puts you at the cathedral as it opens to visitors at 9. You get about 30 minutes inside, then about 45 on the terraces: the lift to the first level and a few dozen steps to the top.

The second half is a walk: back through the Galleria to Piazza della Scala, then Piazza Cordusio and on to Sforza Castle, where you spend about 40 minutes in the courtyards (the castle museums aren't included). Gelato comes on the way. Guests rate it 4.9, the highest of any tour here, and most of them mention the small group and the pace.

At $112 it costs twice the Super Saver. The extra buys the walk, the gelato and a group of 15 instead of 25. The interior gets only 30 minutes, so if the cathedral itself is your priority, a longer inside visit suits you better. Ending at the castle is handy for the afternoon: the operator says the Last Supper museum is 7 minutes away.

  • Small group, 15 at most
  • An early start: in the Duomo as it opens
  • About 45 minutes on the terraces, lift up
  • The Galleria, La Scala, Cordusio and Sforza Castle on foot
  • A gelato tasting on the way

What guests say

★★★★★

Excellent tour. Mr. MARTINO is a great tour guide. Very knowledgeable and informative. The view from the rooftop of the Duomo di Milano is amazing. Loved the ice cream toward the end!

Martino was very knowledgeable and engaging…perfect for seeing a bit of Milan on my own following a hectic work trip. Duomo was the highlight but we learned just enough about the other stops and the ice cream was a nice mid- tour treat.

We had enough time to look around and enjoy Milan as well as seeing the sights. It was nice having a small group of only 15. The gelato was yummy too. Well recommended!

Our guide was knowledgeable and quick with a story about the Duomo or the Castle. He also was ready and quick with an answer to most off hand questions. He made it easy for our group to get around and let us pause for photos wherever we wanted.

Tips before you book

  • Read the message you get the day before: guests received dress code reminders that helped them dress right for the cathedral.
  • On a rare morning a ceremony closes the Duomo early. The operator then gives you tickets to come back later that day or the next.
  • Rain doesn't stop it: guests have done the whole walk in a downpour. Pack a light jacket.
  • Book the Last Supper for the afternoon. You finish at Sforza Castle, close to Santa Maria delle Grazie.
