Wanderinitaly · Piazza del Duomo

Cathedral and roof in two hours

A licensed Wanderinitaly guide takes you through the cathedral for about 55 minutes, then up by lift for an hour on the terraces, all in one go. Pick it when you want both parts back to back, weekends included, when the cheaper Veditalia tour splits them.

Duomo & Rooftop Skip-the-Line Tour

About this experience

The meeting point is under the arches outside the Mondadori store at Piazza del Duomo 1. One guest looked for a white flag and nearly missed the guide's helper, who held a sign at about waist height, so look low. After a few minutes on the facade you go through security and into the cathedral for about 55 minutes: the construction, the windows, the sculpture, and small things like the frogs hidden in the carving that one guide loves to point out.

Then the lift, seven people at a time, to the first terrace, and nearly 50 steps up to the central terrace at 45 metres. You spend about an hour up there, the longest roof time of the combined tours on this site. The descent is on stairs. A guest with a bad knee worried about holding the group up, and wrote afterwards that it went fine.

The catch is the price. Veditalia's Super Saver covers the same two halves for $56, and the official Combo Lift ticket is €26 (about $30). Here you pay $86 for an unbroken two-hour visit with licensed guides and a full hour on the roof. On a weekday, take the cheaper tour. On a weekend, when Veditalia splits the day, this one keeps it in a single block.

  • A full hour on the terraces, lift up
  • Both parts back to back, weekends included

It was our first day in Milan and set the tone for the rest of our trip, which was wonderful. From details like the little frogs she loves to find in the sculpture to esoteric information about the sundial or religious background, the entire tour was excellent.

I was extremely concerned about handling the steps and holding a group up, as I have a bad knee. But, I did fine. I got some really wonderful photos and found the Duomo most exceptional.

Tips before you book

  • At the Mondadori arches, look for a sign held at waist height, not a flag in the air.
  • Keep your voucher open on your phone. A guest's guide had to argue the group's booking through with the Duomo staff.
  • Cover shoulders and knees. Off-the-shoulder tops, shorts, miniskirts and hats aren't allowed inside.
  • Tip your guide if they were good, as a guest reminds others to.
